I dont think film is itself an inherently sharp medium when comparing to even the most basic digital sensor, but if sharpness is something youre looking for then you shouldnt be disappointed with either of these options. I am deciding between HP5+ and Fomapan. I dont think I have as direct an analogy with Fomapan 400, its more of its own thing. #2. 4.50 for the 400 and 4.15 for the 100 ISO, cheaper if you buy 10 packs. I actually received my Ultrafine today and am going to try and load it into the loader tonight. I no longer have to cross my fingers hoping that the negatives will come out. Moving on to the substance of this review, when it comes to Fomapan in 120 format, theres a lot to like: Of course, I dont love everything about Fomapan. Switched to Kentmere 400, got rid of a lot of frustration and put the fun is back in photography! Also, it seemed I could never get Fomapan to dry cleanly no matter what I tried. Wish it werent so. A few shots on the roll looked flat and lifeless, no matter what I did to them in Photoshop. I feel that maybe I could take the developer to even 90 as some of the images still look a bit underexposed. I recently wrote a 5 Frames With Fomapan 400 where I described the results shot at EI1600 with a 2 stop push. I'm highly likely to use all rolls before they expire, and in any case it's B&W film so it's good for a few years beyond the expiry date. That could be a place I settle. Anyway, I am bulkloading my 35mm rolls so at the end it can be very very cheap indeed, and this is something I enjoy when I go shooting or I want to experiment. However, Ilford HP5 is notoriously grainy. And I don't have the discipline to plan ahead, let the roll acclimatize a few hours before loading etc; I like having the option to be impulsive. Not. I think I showed my results in the Cinestill article. Add to Wish List Item in Wish List . Can you talk about what developers you used? Thank you! However the overall effect is actually quite muddy, and unpleasing to my eye, whereas the Fomapan in the same condition is undeniably less detailed, but results in a nicer image (in my opinion). My experimentation with small batch and small manufacturers film offerings is to totally try to see if theyre closer to films I loved in the past, like Verichrome Pan! Fomapan 400 does not push well. I take my results at 400 and, more often than not, am happy with them. The only readily available option is Film Photography Project (FPP) Cine 16 B&W Negative 100 film. Sort: Clear All. Shadow detail is close to non-existent in these situations, but I am usually happier with the look of these images. Thanks for the suggestions. Thanks Matthias! Those came out the cleanest! Foma 100 is available in 35mm and 120 formats where Kentmere 400 only comes in 35mm. There is no longer that very obvious and annoying halation or muddiness in the prints. I then shot 14 frames of a second roll of Foma 400, this time exposed for 320ISO, but developed at 90 degrees. I got on my high horse and wrote an email to Foma to complain. It's supposed to be the closest you can get today to the legendary Tr-X of the 60s. Anyway, I bought a 10 pack of 200 and a 10 pack of 400 a while ago, the 400 consistently gave me meh results. I have never used Fomapan and am wondering if it is worthwhile. See if you can guess which is which in the comments! Chemical mixing correct? But as Andy Umbo above noted, Fomapan films have a certain look. Id never discourage anyone from using it. I bought up a bunch of Foma because of the low price, but ended up getting rid of most of it. Id say that Fomapan 400 is fairly low grain, but largegrained very visible, but not bad to my eye. The argument about rolling your own that makes sense to me is the ability to customize the lengths of rolls, especially if you want short rolls. Shooting: A Praktica LTL And Expired Konica 400. Every time I use it, I wonder why I dont use it more often. And I had a roll of Foma 400 lying around so I thought I would take all three films to the back streets and see which one I prefer. The one of the left is the Fomapan. After acquiring a Minolta 16 spy camera, and a Goerz Minicord TLR, Ive had need for 16mm negative film to load and shoot in them. Call me stubborn, but I always shoot a film for the first time at box speed. Pop in a blues CD and Im in the zone. Both of these are fine by me as I love this in my photography and its such a practical developer for me right now. Still experienced thin negatives. Thanks! When the contrast is good, the images are nice, some of my favorite. Heres a shot that I got from the last time I shot Kentmere 400: The Fomapan suffers at 400, with a blockier rendering, and a foggy grey tone in the blacks which somewhat spoils the aesthetic, unless thats something youre especially looking for. No items to compare. I thought about rolling my own, but when I pencilled it out, Id only save a buck or so per roll, not counting the cost of the film rollers or canisters. It, Nice post. Youre right to be suspicious of internet information. I also liked the painting of the Locomotive, the brick texture of the wall really comes through. I started shooting with Kentmere a few months ago, in the hopes that it would provide a cheap, versatile walk-around film for general purpose street photography. The negatives actually looked like negatives and not a clear strip with faint images. Here is one Fomapan 200 shot I recently developed and scanned myself: The 400, while I like the shot more, its a tad grainy and flat for me (I dont play much with the parameters on black and white film, just invert, desaturate and some cropping). And it's not great for pushing at all. Generally you heat up the chemicals to 80F and use constant agitation. An update here. I dont know yet. There are definitely shared characteristics in the results of these films, but I think its more like that Fomapan 400 is a cubic grained film. Theres a ton of character in it.
